We chatted with celebrity chef, author, and TV personality Ayesha Curry about the best ways to eat healthier and how to make mealtime family time.

What are some ways Americans can make healthier food more convenient?

Food prep! Having healthy foods like pre-cut vegetables, fruit, raw nuts, and ready-to-eat lunches in the fridge makes healthy eating habits easier. You can also eat healthier, and save time and money by creating weekly menus and shopping lists. Having your meals preplanned is a great way to keep you on budget and keep you conscious of what you’re feeding your family.

In the past five to 10 years, how has modern technology changed the cooking process?

Cooking, whether at home or in a restaurant, is always evolving and changing. We have so many tools now that simplify cooking. Modern technology is a big part of that.

What advice would you give to someone looking to reinvent their kitchen to make cooking a more seamless experience?

Simplify your kitchen. Store all those unused gadgets and cooking utensils. The more space and organization you have in your kitchen, the better you’ll feel.

How do you build your grocery list? Are there any tricks you use to make sure you don’t forget anything?

Keeping your pantry stocked with essential everyday ingredients is the key. I like to sit and plan a menu for the week and use it as the base for my grocery list. And also adding an extra protein for a little variety.

The average American throws away between $29 and $43 worth of edible food per person each month. What are some ways Americans can reduce waste in their home?

Shop with the intention of sticking to your grocery list. And freeze or share leftovers you know will not be eaten.

What steps has your family taken to reduce your carbon footprint when it comes to the kitchen?

We are huge on recycling and using reusable containers.

What’s your family’s favorite celebratory meal?

It would have to be my mom’s brown sugar chicken with a bowl of white rice! Comfort food.

How has your kitchen influenced your family dynamic?

It’s our gathering place. The place where we share a meal and talk about our day. Many of my happiest memories throughout my life have been spent with my family around the kitchen table.
