Life on the road is rewarding but risky. Truck drivers should plan ahead with these tips to protect themselves and their families.

Trucking is a lifestyle that isn’t for everyone and isn’t for the faint of heart. An over-the-road truck driver can be on the road for days or weeks at a time. Some drivers may even live in their rigs. Rated as one of the most dangerous professions, dealing with other highway users, unfamiliar terrain, weather, stress from scheduling deadlines, and an array of other factors, it is no wonder that the life expectancy of professional truck drivers is many years below the average.
While we all hope for a safe, on-time journey with each dispatch, the reality is that things can go wrong. Sudden health crises, collisions, mechanical failures, and even company issues like termination or closings can and have occurred while out on our nation’s highways. Being prepared and having a plan is as important as that pre-trip inspection.
Prepaid cards and savings
Having a prepaid credit card or a designated savings account can help you get home. Although one of the most regulated industries, there are no laws, statutes, ordinances, regulations, or mandates compelling any company to help get any driver home for any reason. While many companies do, you should know your company’s policy before heading out on the road. The prepaid card or account should hold enough funds to get you, your belongings, your partner, and your pet home from the farthest point you would travel from home.
A prepaid card would also help get you home with a rental car. All your belongings may be difficult to get on a bus or plane, and if you do not have your pet’s shots up to date, you won’t get on the bus anyway.
Life insurance
Your life insurance policy should be 10 times your annual earnings. Insurance was initially designed to help any surviving family members transition after the loss of the primary breadwinner. While some companies may provide a minimum group policy, it is wise to purchase your own policy specific to your individual needs.
Lastly, learn of, find, and purchase a travel plan at any reputable funeral home that would pay the costs of returning you home to your loved ones. These are usually in the five-to-six-hundred-dollar range and could save your family thousands.
Stay well, stay safe, and enjoy the freedoms of the road this industry provides.
